MUNICIPALITIES Background Information

Sustainability

The key to making water conservation a sustainable program for any municipality is to recruit a group to champion the cause of water conservation. Typically Green Teams, Environmental Commissions, or some other local stakeholder group can serve in this role. Once this group has taken ownership of a water conservation program, they can serve as the lead on grant applications and other funding opportunities, which will strengthen their role as the leader of the water conservation efforts in the community.

The Rutgers Cooperative Extension Water Resources Program, in Partnership with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and the United States Environmental Protection Agency, developed and implemented three water conservation programs as part of New Jersey Water Savers. These water conservation programs could easily be implemented in your municipality.
